Data is collected on all deceased bears. This allows for accurate record keeping to aid in population, attrition and listing status of the Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus). Often people will pick up a vehicle hit bear to use for a trophy or food. This is illegal and hurts important record keeping of Florida black bear data. Collected data from the bear includes weight and measurements, hair sample, tooth sample and any parasites, new wounds, old scars etc.

This is arguably the largest bear ever in Florida. He weighed over 640 pounds using a measurement formula after he bottomed out a 500 pound scale. The vehicle that hit him was totaled and the driver transported to the hospital. The driver was fortunate that he was not killed as well.
